Benja Harney is literally a paper genius. A self-taught ‘Paper Engineer’ acutally!
I’ve been a fan of his work since I first saw it in a Sportsgirl catalogue, years ago. He had created some eye-catching paper backdrops for the fashion shoot. I can’t recall the trends Sportsgirl was pushing in that particular season- but I certainly remember Benja’s oversize paper gemstone jewellery, and his backdrops of giant paper butterflies.
When he’s not flying to Paris to work alongside Hermés- crafting a collection of paper wings to adorn their store windows, creating pop up books for Kylie Minogue, erecting gigantic foliage installations for Sydney’s Queen Victoria Building, or dressing sets for Romance Was Born’s opening of Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, then he’s working on a ton of side collaborations. Each one of those projects is the work of a genius.
How to make 100 coloured prisms stand scaled in size, appearing in regimented position, like little soldiers? Benja’s done it.
A paper sculpture of a mini Napoleon? He’s done that too.
One of the most recent projects was the ‘Second Skin’ mask contest launched by Arjowiggins Creative Papers. Benja’s mask below, was one of 8 invited submissions from paper artist’s worldwide.
